In nuclear reactors, subatomic particles called neutrons are slowed down by allowing them to collide with the?

I don't know the answer to this question but i would like to share my knowledge by telling you that these slow moving neutrons are absorbed by cadmium rods to stop the nuclear reaction.And in a nuclear reactor Graphite and D2O are used as a moderator.
