Did earth escape any major collision in the 90s?

I remember my science teacher telling "Tonight you'll see fire rain" when I was studying 5th or 6th standard. Around the same period I saw a news telescast showing (might be an animation) earth espcaing from a large fragment of mass. Not sure on the news which I "caught on air" that earth escaped once narrowly with a big asteroid (or meteorite) which collided on jupiter later. Did earth escape any major collision in the 90s? Please solve a lost-lasting mystery inside me before it becoming a myth for my children.
